Bedford Woman Charged With Stealing $130K From Son's Settlement

Police said she used the money without her son's permission to pay for her own personal expenses.

BEDFORD, NY — A 77 -year-old Bedford woman faces possible jail time for stealing thousands of dollars from her son. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced Thursday that Marie Monteleone, of Bishop Road in Bedford, pleaded not guilty in Bedford Town Court after being charged with second-degree grand larceny, a felony.

The victim, who is Monteleone's son, was born with severe birth defects. A lawsuit was filed by his mother and father which resulted in a settlement to be used for his benefit alone.

Over the course of several decades, the victim, who is now 41, received Social Security benefits but was never told by Monteleone that he also had a source of money to support himself and to go to college.

Investigators said she defendant stole approximately $130,000 and used those funds to pay for her own personal expenses without the knowledge, permission or authority of her son.

The investigation, which began a little more than two years ago, was conducted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

Monteleone was released on her own recognizance.

She faces a maximum of five to 15 years in state prison.

Her next court date is Oct. 11.
