Cops On Stakeout Watched Postal Box 'Fishing' Suspect Shove Stolen Mail Into His Pants: Police

Detectives used license plate readers, surveillance and cameras to identify a vehicle tied to the thefts, police said.

BEDFORD, NY — Three men were arrested after Bedford police said they were caught during surveillance tied to a series of mail thefts from post office drop boxes in Katonah and Bedford Hills.

The arrests came after detectives spent weeks investigating “numerous mail thefts” from the Katonah and Bedford Hills post office drop boxes. Police said other Westchester communities have also been targeted by similar larcenies.

Using license plate readers and surveillance, detectives identified suspects and a vehicle police believe was being used in the mail thefts.

On Thursday, at about 11 p.m., that suspect vehicle parked near the Bedford Hills Post Office, according to police. Three suspects got out of the vehicle. Two acted as lookouts while a third man went to a USPS drop box, removed multiple pieces of mail and hid them in his pants, according to cops.

Police said officers approached the men as they stood outside the vehicle and took them into custody.

All three were taken to Bedford Police Department headquarters, where they were processed and charged. They were charged with petit larceny, four counts; criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, four counts; possession of burglar tools; and conspiracy in the sixth degree.

The men arrested were identified by police as Breilin Mirabel Matos, 26, of Mount Vernon; Orbik Gutierrez, 29, of the Bronx and Raymond Duluc Nathanial, 23, of the Bronx.

All three defendants are due back in Bedford Town Court on June 10.
