Springtime is calling us...back to the dog park!
With the warmer weather here, dogs of all sizes and breeds look forward to additional outdoor play. The Town of Bedford’s Canine Commons is a popular spot for area dog owners and their canine companions to enjoy a day of dog-centered activity.
Located at 135 Beaver Dam Road in Katonah, the park consists of 17 acres of unspoiled land including three fenced park areas: one for small dogs, another for large dogs and a third for agility training and other programs.
A visit to the park brings smiles to the faces of children and adults alike, as dogs make new friends, play with old buddies, romp around or just sit and watch the other dogs go by. Dog owners can be seen laughing and talking in small groups, comparing dog stories, seeking advice from others dog lovers or just shooting the breeze while their dogs are having the time of their lives!
BDOG is the volunteer organization that works with the Town to sustain the mission of the park: enriching the lives and recreational opportunities for dogs and their owners. Rose Goldfine, a local resident and President of the Bedford Dog Owners Group (BDOG), was one of the driving forces behind the park’s development. “It’s a wonderful social experience for dogs and owners alike. Dogs are social creatures and they look forward to their visits to the park where they can be dogs in the truest sense. When they come home tired from the days activities, many of them curl up and just want to sleep...all that exercise is a great benefit to the dog and to the entire household. It helps keep dogs balanced.”
BDOG is currently advising on possible upgrades to the park. “We welcome local dog park users to join us in keeping the Canine Commons a safe and enjoyable facility for our community,” said Len Martello, an enthusiastic dog park user and BDOG volunteer.
To that end, an informational meeting is planned for Wednesday, April 18 at the Katonah Restaurant starting at 7:30 PM. “Goldfine describes the event as “ an informal gathering to share information about our work, and to encourage new members to join the group. We invite all interested dog park users to join us at the meeting and find out more.”
The Bedford dog park is open daily from dawn to dusk and fees are $40/year for Town of Bedford residents, $100/year for non-residents. More information can be found at http://www.bedfordny.info/html/parks.html.
