Grads Cap Off Four Years at John Jay: Photos and Video

The John Jay High School Class of 2010 came together one final time Thursday evening to celebrate their accomplishments together--and as individuals, ready for the next phase of their lives.

Students in purple and white gowns proceeded to their seats, smiling and waving to friends and family gathered to witness the ceremony.

After Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Roelle provided welcoming remarks, the co-presidents of the outgoing senior class, Josh Buckwald and Stephen DiGregoria, made the presentation of " key knowledge," to next year's class officers, Kelsey Beaty and Sophie Hasson.

Salutatorian Michael Mitchel addressed his fellow classmates and urged them to think beyond their own needs to help others.

"We must live for the world that welcomed us, for the people that protected us and for the community that cared for us," he said. "We must make enemies of none and brothers and sisters of us all."

Valedictorian Max Siegel advised his classmates to look at their futures with an eye toward experiencing the new and exotic. He cited celebrity chef Thomas Keller's "Law of Diminishing Returns" as a philosophy he'd embraced to push himself into new territory.

"In seventh grade I was persuaded to play football during recess, never having picked up a pigskin…I was terrible but I relished the experience," he said. Don't worry about how good you are at what you do—worry about the thrill and the joy and the richness of life, he said.

The keynote address was provided by English teacher Jeanetta Ziegler-Bryant,  followed by Jackie Feinberg, who gave the senior class address.

Feinberg touched on themes of renewing self through community. Whether it was support from her field hockey teammates, or late-night instant messaging with friends over term papers, or in-class bonding over bad Australian accents, she said she was who she was, because of her family and friends.

"I think the hope we give each other, the love we infuse in each other, can fuel our generation and carry us through anything we may have to face," she said.

After remarks by school board President Michael Gordon and Principal Ellen Doherty, the students were declared officially graduated.
