Harvey Boys One Win Away from Trip to Rugby Championships
Harvey boys rugby hopes to make a trip to Syracuse
Harvey’s boys rugby team kept its state championship hopes alive with an impressive 33-10 victory Wednesday over the Long Island Colts.
The long trek from Katonah to Long Island, a change in venue upon arrival and a delayed kickoff did not deter the Cavaliers who started off strong and were quickly rewarded for the efforts. Following a strong eight-man move by Christian Harrington in Colt territory, Christian Artuso darted through the defense to score in the 6th minute of play.
Just three minutes later, following a stolen lineout, the backs worked the ball out wide to a hard charging Malcolm Koonce who did the rest and dotted down for points. Artuso’s conversion was true and Harvey led by 12 points.
Showing no letup, Harvey kept the pressure on Long Island. In the 15th minute of play, following some nice work by the forwards, the ball found flyhalf Charlie Seider who muscled his way into the tryzone. Artuso’s conversion put Harvey in the lead by 19.
The Cavaliers had the Colts pinned deep, but following a turnover, the Colts capitalized as their fullback entered the line at pace and broke several tackles with a highlight 80-meter run to cut into Harvey’s lead. That would be as close as the Colts would get.
Nearing halftime Harvey methodically controlled possession. Following some more hard work, Koonce found pay dirt once again in the 31st minute, giving Harvey a halftime lead of with a 26-5.
The second half was a more evenly contested one as the Colts slowed their possession down and began to have more success with their grinding offense. Harvey and the Colts traded one try apiece in the second half, but and the Cavaliers held on and were able to celebrate their 33-10 victory.
The win raises Harvey’s season record to 8-3 with its last match Saturday against St. Antony’s at 6 p.m. It should be an exciting match as both squads are currently tied in the league. The winner will advance to the New York State Rugby Championships in Syracuse and the loser will be done for the season.
