Harvey, leading 3-1 entering doubles play, looked poised to win the match and move on to the semifinals, but Chase swept all three doubles matches.

Coach Christine Cahill says the team’s three coaches are proud of young team. “As a team made up of mostly sophomores and two middle schoolers, we know our program can only become stronger,” said coach Cahill. “There is no telling where the season will take us next year,” she added<. >

Harvey finishes with a 4-6 record.

Harvey Boys to Play for a Fourth Tennis Title

Harvey finished the regular season Friday, May 8, with another convincing victory, 7-2 over Chase Collegiate, capping their regular season record at 10-1 and giving the three-time reigning HVAL champions the #1 seed in this week’s playoffs.

Harvey romped in singles, winning all six matches by comfortable margins. With his 10-2 win at #1 singles, Alec Roslin finished the regular season undefeated. At #2 Tyler Levy continued his strong play with a comfortable 10-2 win. Zach Goligoski won at #3 singles, 10-5, Daniel Qiu won at #4, 10-3, Jackson Hammerstein won at #5, 10-3 and Alex McLean at #6 finished the sweep with a solid 10-5 victory. Harvey Girls Lacrosse Primed for Playoffs

Senior Aliya Mayers had the game of her life Saturday, May 9, scoring seven goals to help Harvey’s girls lacrosse team defeat Wooster 17-6 and end the regular season at 10-0.

Two Katonah residents, freshmen Sadie Albert and Julia Mallon had another big game. Albert had four goals and four assists while Julia Mallon scored two goals and picked up one assist.

“We came out against Wooster with confidence and played our style of lacrosse,” said Harvey coach Greg Janos. The coach was looking at this final regular season game as an opportunity to have his team poised for the playoffs which start this week.

Coach Janos said, “This was a good test for us after two extremely close games last week and we are satisfied with the results. Our attack and midfield continue to build on their chemistry with outstanding ball movement. We look ready for the playoffs.”

Harvey also got goals from Pound Ridge’s Melissa Shaw-Patino, Sophia Scarsella and Tiaja Downer and Jane Wiesenberg.

Harvey Boys Win LAX Season Finale

Harvey’s boys varsity lacrosse team exploded for three goals in the last minute of play to seal a 13-4 victory over Chase Collegiate Wednesday, May 6, in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The victory in Harvey’s final regular season game comes after the Cavaliers had suffered two straight overtime losses.

Harvey came out strong and went up 3-0 early and went into halftime with a 4-1 lead.

After a back and forth third quarter with each team scoring three, the Cavaliers came out strong in the fourth and capped the scoring with the three goals in the last minute of the game.

Connor Wilson had one of Harvey’s three hat tricks. The senior captain had four goals and two assists. Junior Javen Stepp-Davis collected three goals and two assists and eighth-grader Max Kesicki of Katonah notched the third hat trick for the Cavaliers. Junior goalie Brian Benjamin finished with a season high 20 saves.

Harvey ends the regular season at 4-5 and looks to the start of the playoffs this week.

Harvey Boys Rugby Downs New Rochelle

Harvey’s boys rugby team, the reigning New York State Tier II champion, scored an impressive 60-19 win Wednesday over league rival New Rochelle. Harvey was looking to rebound from its disappointing loss to highly-ranked Xavier Saturday and to keep its hopes alive for a return trip to the NY State Championships in June.

The Cavaliers were firing on all cylinders from the outset as the team displayed a high level of intensity. In the opening minute of play flyhalf Raphael Tapia pinned New Rochelle deep and the kick was mishandled. Immediate pressure by Harvey’s backs led to John Jay High School’s Reed Feldman breaking through from 9 meters out. When Joe O’Connell converted, Harvey led by 7.

In the 6th minute of play, the Cavaliers worked the ball down the pitch and an ensuing run by Tapia set up a maul allowing Harvey’s forwards to crash in for a 12 point lead. With the Cavaliers keeping the pressure on, the forwards executed several nice forays leading to a try by senior front row player Dillon Singleton of Mount Kisco. O’Connell converted to up Harvey’s lead to 19 points.

Center Ilan Gressel continued the onslaught with back-to-back trys in the 13th and 17th minutes of play. His second try was caused by winger <Jordan Washington>’s powerful hit which forced a turnover ball and led to Gressel getting in the clear for an 80 meter score.

In the 22nd minute, Harvey lost a scrummage and New Rochelle put its first points on the board to make the score 31 to 7.

In the 28th and 35th minutes of play Harvey broke through to make the score at the half, Harvey 43, New Rochelle 7.

The second half saw much of the same as Harvey scored in the 46th, 55th and 64th minutes of play. Reed, Jake Rogers and Kole Dokaj dotted down to cap the scoring for Harvey

Harvey coach Phil Lazzaro liked what he saw from the Cavaliers. “The boys displayed a high level of play and I was proud of their effort and intensity throughout the match,” said coach Lazzaro.

Meanwhile, the JV got a chance to play an abbreviated match following the varsity victory. Scores by Michael Wilson and Jake Rogers cut into the New Rochelle lead but the JV fell short.

Girls Rugby Wraps Up Season at Home

Harvey’s girls rugby team ended its season with a 45-5 blanking by Prusa Play Rugby USA Academy, Saturday, May 9.

Harvey’s girls team, only in its second season of competition, gave a valiant effort against a seasoned Prusa team. “Although our girls played aggressive, smart rugby with a lot of heart, they were outsized and out run by the more powerful Play Rugby team,” said Harvey coach Ciara Lehane.

In the second half, the Lady Cavs attacked the Play Rugby defense, running several pod crashes into PRUSA’s wall of defenders for several phases. When sophomore Brianna Casino dove for the try line and grounded the ball just on the try line between the feet of PRUSA’s players, she gave the Lady Cavaliers their lone score.

Coach Lehane says her fledgling team can take pride in the fact that it has never been shut out in two seasons. She sees Harvey’s program taking steps to grow into a strong program. “As the season closes, we look forward to building on the successes and lessons that we gained from playing this season,” said coach Lehane.

Harvey’s Seniors Day Spoiled in Late Innings

On a day that Harvey’s varsity baseball team honored its six seniors prior to its game against The Master’s School Tuesday, May 5, the Cavaliers lost an early lead and suffered a disappointing 7-6 loss.

Senior Austin Forman, who got the call to start on the mound for the Cavaliers, pitched well but was victimized by some shaky defense which gave Master’s extra outs to capitalize on.

Harvey scored single runs in the first and second innings. An RBI double by Forman in the first inning plated the first run. The Cavaliers took advantage of a Master’s error in the second, allowing Cross River’s Marc Catanese to score and take a 2-0 lead and the end of two innings.

Things got a little sloppy for Harvey in the third as the Cavaliers gave up three runs on two hits and two misplays in the outfield. Harvey came right back and regained the lead 6-3 with a four-run third inning. Forman reached on an error, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Andrew Scherl. Catanese followed up with a double and scored on a single by Waccabuc’s Theo Rattner. The fourth run came when Ryan Alpert walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a clutch two-out single from senior Anthony Rusciano, putting Harvey up 6-3. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers were done scoring after the third inning as they were kept off balance by the Master’s lefty relief pitcher. Harvey had not seen much of southpaws all this season.

Master’s would score two runs in the fifth inning to cut Harvey’s the lead to one. The tying run scored in the seventh on a fielder’s choice after a leadoff hit and walk. A two-out double in the bottom of the seventh by Andrew Scherl gave Harvey hope of getting a walkoff win, but the next batter struck out to send the game into extra innings.

Scherl, who came in to pitch after the fifth inning, did a good job in the eighth, striking out the first two batters he faced. Harvey lost the lead when the next batter doubled to left field and scored when the relay was thrown out of play from the outfield, allowing the baserunner two extra bases.

Harvey again threatened in the bottom of the eighth, getting a man on base with two out, but the Cavaliers failed to score. It was the fourth league loss for Harvey by one run.

“We have had some tough luck this year, not being able to close out games,” said coach Mike Rubenfeld. “We shot ourselves in the foot in this game, with too many mistakes allowing Master’s to get back into the game and eventually take the lead,” added Rubenfeld.
