The Harvey volleyball team defeated Christian Heritage 3-1 in the first round in the HVAL playoffs Monday, Nov. 3 at Harvey. The match was close with Harvey winning the first two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-20. Christian Heritage forced a fourth game with a 25-20 victory in game three, but Harvey won the match by outlasting the visitors 25-18 in the fourth and deciding game.

Ariana Weaver and Anna Ketner controlled the net while Emily Sirota, along with Ketner, took care of the setting. Carly Kaplan, Lindsay Cardaci and Sasha Fox all contributed to the offense and the team got solid defensive contributions from Claudia Smith and Rebecca Tuteur.

Serving was key again as Ketner led with five aces, Weaver had 4, Kaplan and Sirota both had three with Fox chipping in with two and Cardaci with one. Ketner also led in kills with eight. Sirota led in assists with seven and Ketner added five. Fox led her team with three digs.

Coach Dave Ketner hopes the first-round win spurs his team to a good showing in the next round. “We are looking forward to carrying our momentum to the semi-finals to play the first place Chase Collegiate Wednesday.”

Girls Soccer Bounced from Playoffs

Playing with a limited roster due to injuries, the girls varsity soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Forman in the quarterfinal round of the HVAL playoffs, Monday, Nov.3.

The Lady Cavaliers put up a strong fight against a team they had lost to 8-2 earlier in the season. Coach Greg Janos was proud of his team’s effort. “Once again the demonstration of heart these girls showed continues to amaze me.”

Leading the charge on offense were Julia Frisch with five shots on goal, Hannah Morris with four and Amaya Henry and Brie Frieri with two each. Kelly McMorrow was strong in front of the net, making 20 saves. Jasmine Brouwer, Sydney Lunder, Bridget Bojic, and Angelique Santiago continued to be a solid last line of defense.

With the loss, Harvey’s season ends, but Coach Janos says he has great respect for the effort the girls gave in every game. “They have never let me down. It’s been an honor to coach such a determined group of young women.”

Boy Soccer Ends Season with Playoff Loss

Harvey’s varsity boys soccer lost its first round match of the HVAL playoffs Monday 4-0 to Christian Heritage School, one of the strongest teams in New England prep soccer this year.

Harvey came out strong during the first 15 minutes of the game and put some nice passing together resulting in some quality chances, but Heritage’s midfield began to take the game over during the last 30 minutes of the half as they found holes in the Harvey defense and scored four times before the halftime whistle.

As has been the case all season, Harvey had to battle just to stay in the game. Led by seniors Sacha Kantor, Mark Siegel, Alfredo Liendo and Jack Mather, the Harvey squad re-focused itself during halftime and played hard throughout the remainder of the game.

Junior Zack Goligoski made many fine saves during the second half and kept Heritage from scoring again.

The Cavaliers end the season with 2-12-2 record.

Harvey Cross-Country Wraps Up Season

Harvey’s cross-country team wrapped up its 2014 fall season Saturday, Nov. 1, in a six-team meet in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championship race in Litchfield, Connecticut. Harvey runners competed against teams from host Forman, Chase Collegiate, Watkinson, Christian Heritage and South Kent.

Harvey’s team finished fifth among the six teams. In the boys race, Harvey’s senior captain Samuel Mackiewicz finished sixth with a time of 19:51. Junior David Solano finished 30th with a time of 23:31 with senior Matanel Cohen-Weinberg finishing 32nd, only one minute behind Solano. Senior captain Marshall Euchner came in 34th with a time of 26:33 with freshman Jordan Bond finishing 20 second later in 35th place.

Overall, the girls had a better showing. Harvey’s freshman Julia Mallon came in eighth place with a time of 25:28. Freshman Sadie Albert finished 10th with a time of 25:50. Kate D’Avanzo finished 11th with a time of 26:11. Jewel Li finished 18th with a time of 32:02, and senior Shelby Moore finished 21st with a time of 35:47. The Lady Cavaliers finished with 43 points- second to Chase Collegiate’s 16.

Harvey coach Mike Lauria said he was pleased with the effort his runners gave on a day less than ideal day for running. “It was cold, windy and rainy, but that took no emotion away from the Harvey runners. They didn’t let the weather get to them. They put in their usual 100 percent effort.”

Harvey Football Gets Win in Final Home Game

The Harvey Varsity football team ended the regular season Saturday, Nov. 1, on a high note with a convincing 32-6 victory at home against New York Military Academy. The Cavaliers made their last home game of the season a memorable one, racking up 427 offensive yards and thoroughly dominating the NYMA Knights on both sides of the ball.

Harvey scored first on a 15-yard pass from junior quarterback Tom Smith to Javen Stepp-Davis. Senior Jared Finkel intercepted a short NYMA pass and Harvey scored again two minutes later on a four-yard run by senior Ricky Hicks. The Knights scored their only points on the next drive after a 44-yard reverse play put the ball on the Harvey two-yard line. Stepp-Davis blocked the extra point and the first quarter ended with Harvey on top 16 - 6.

Smith, a junior captain, struck again in the second period on a bootleg pass finding junior Joe O’ Connell wide open in the end-zone, hitting him with a 32-yard TD pass. Harvey’s final touchdown of the day came on a two-yard run by sophomore Teddy Little on the last play of the third quarter.

Smith completed eight of 12 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Harvey’s ground attack pounded out 286 total yards and two TDs with Hicks and Little leading the way with 112 and 111 yards, respectively. Stepp-Davis, a junior captain, debuted at tight end and led the team with five catches for 69 yards and a TD. Junior Joe O’ Connell added one catch for 32 yards and a TD.

Finkel led the defense with five tackles and an interception while Stepp-Davis made five tackles and blocked an extra point. Also coming up big on defense were freshman John Sullivan with four tackles, senior Jameson Scarsella with three tackles and a recovered fumble and Little and O’ Connell with three tackles apiece. Junior Jordan Washington had two tackles and an interception.

The Cavaliers will travel to Dwight-Englewood in Englewood, New Jersey Sunday, Nov. 9, for a Hudson Valley Football League bowl game to decide third place in the conference. It will be a rematch of the two teams that met in September in a game Harvey lost 21-20 when the Cavaliers opted to try for the win but failed to make the two-point conversion in the final seconds of the game.
