Hudson Valley Breweries Bring Home 8 Medals In State Beer Competition
Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in 20 beer categories.
HUDSON VALLEY, NY — More than 60 craft beers were awarded medals in the first New York State Craft Beer competition which took place Saturday, July 29 in Rochester. Eight breweries in the mid- and lower Hudson Valley were among the winners.
Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in 20 beer categories that covered 40 different beer styles, which, according to organizers, established the best examples of each style in the state. Winners were chosen from 707 entries from 143 breweries, making this the largest beer competition in the state and the second largest — behind California — in the nation.

Forty beer judges and beer experts adjudicated all 707 entries. A total of 63 medals were awarded.
The 19 gold medal winners went into the championship round. There were two elimination rounds that produced the top five.

From the final five, the best beer in the state was determined and awarded the first-ever Governor’s Excelsior Cup.
It went to Threes Brewing in Brooklyn for its Vliet Pilsner.
Sixteen of the breweries won two medals, including Mill House Brewing in Poughkeepsie and Rushing Duck in Chester.
The local medal-winning beers were:
- Peekskill Brewery; Peekskill; for Pinky Up; Fruit and Spice Beer Category — Gold medal
- Brewery at CIA; Hyde Park; for Class Project Saison; Belgian Farmhouse Category — Silver medal
- Rushing Duck; Chester; for Brux IPA; American IPA Variations Category — Bronze medal
- Blue Point Brewing Co.; Florida; for Oyster Stout; Porter, Stout, Brown Ale Category — Bronze medal
- Rushing Duck; Chester; for Zingerbier Berliner Weisse; Wild and Sour Ale Category — Gold medal
- Mill House Brewing Co.; Poughkeepsie; for Citra Bridges; Wild and Sour Ale Category — Gold medal
- Duncan’s Abbey; Tarrytown; for Abbot’s Reserve; Wild and Sour Ale Category — Silver medal
- Mill House Brewing Co.; Poughkeepsie; for Cucumber Blessings; Experimental Beer Category — Bronze medal
