John Jay then took control of the game with three runs in the third and two runs in the fifth.
"We definitely got some big at-bats in key moments, that's for sure," John Jay coach Geoff Curtis said.
Evan O'Connor hit a two-run triple and Tyler Keech delivered an RBI single in the third and Jason Valvano a two-run double in the fifth, making a winner of Will Jahn.
Jahn pitched five innings where he was in complete control, alllowing just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six.
Kyle Ferris pitched two innings of shutout ball in relief to secure the win for the Indians.
"The pitching has been doing a nice job all season in terms of ball-strike ratio," Curtis said. "And defensively, we picked things up today. We weren't making our pitchers get four and five outs and that makes a huge difference."
He then talked about how much he liked the combination of Jahn and Ferris.
"Will Jahn and Kyle Ferris are completely two different types of pitchers," Curtis said. "Will is the hard-throwing righty with the nice breaking ball. Kyle then comes in a much softer thrower from the left side and it's hard to differentiate that when you are a hitter."
John Jay's Brian Gleason also played a key role in the win, recording two hits and two runs.
