Katonah Man Pleads Guilty to Not Paying State Income Taxes

His consignment business was being investigated when the tax fraud came to light.

KATONAH, NY — A consignment business owner has pleaded guilty to not paying state income taxes.

Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty said Wednesday that Barry Shevit, 68, of Katonah, was charged with repeated failure to file personal returns, a felony.

McCarty said the tax fraud came to light when his office was investigating Shevit’s consignment business.

Officials said the business owner did not file personal income tax returns to New York State for three consecutive years.

In 2011, the tax liability was $10,153. In 2012, it was $3,112, and in 2013, the tax liability was $6,281.

The total amount of unpaid state income taxes, including prior tax years, is about $28,862.

Shevit was arrested March 20, 2015 by investigators from the New York State Police.

He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to be sentenced October 19, 2016.
