Katonah's Harvey School Sports Wrap UP

Once again, the collective effort was solid, and so were some of the results.

The following weekly sports wrap up is from The Harvey School:

Marvelwood put early pressure on the Harvey defense and earned a corner kick at the 15 minute mark of the game. Marvelwood went up 1-0 when they converted the corner as the Harvey defense failed to mark a runner to the near post.

The Cavaliers gained a little possession of the ball and began to launch balls over the top. Before the half, Harvey junior Brian Benjamin of Chappaqua would tie the game as he received a long ball from Colin Nardi and scored on a breakaway to knot the game at 1-1.

Both sides would have chances to score during the second half, but good goalkeeping kept the score tied. Junior Zack Goligoski made eight saves on the afternoon while juniors Adam Penino of South Salem and Tyler Levy of Chappaqua were solid with defensive pressure throughout the match. The game was hard fought by both sides and neither team could break the tie.

Harvey Girls Soccer Edge Storm King

Harvey’s girls varsity soccer team, behind excellent goalkeeping and a relentless defense, defeated Storm King School 2-1 Monday, Oct. 27, in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Junior Sarah Chintz followed up her stellar performance in front of the net in the 0-0 tie <last Friday> against Oakwood Friends, with another outstanding effort in helping Harvey defeat the Cougars on their home field.

It was a back and forth game with both teams creating plenty of scoring opportunities until Harvey junior Julia Frisch found a way to end the scoring drought. Frisch intercepted a goal kick, beat her defender with a quick move and blasted a shot past the Storm King goalie, giving her team the 1-0 lead. Frisch also played a part in Harvey’s second goal scored by junior forward Hannah Morris. Harvey went up 2-0 when Frisch took an outside pass from JoJo Greenwood and crossed the ball through the goalie box where a charging Hannah Morris was able to track it down and tuck it inside the near post. It turned out to be the game-winning goal for Harvey as Storm King scored with minutes left in the game. Jasmine Brouwer. Sydney Lunder and Angelique Santiago also came up big in the game, helping to put Harvey in position to win.

“It was a solid win, a complete team effort,” said Coach Greg Janos. “Everyone played well and did their jobs,” he added.

Harvey Football Loses to Newark Academy

The Harvey varsity football team lost 32-16 on the road against Newark Academy in Livingston, New Jersey, Saturday, Oct. 25, in a game that was much closer than the score would indicate.

After a scoreless first quarter, Newark drew first blood early in the second when it sacked Harvey quarterback Tom Smith in the end zone for a safety. Newark scored on the ensuing possession on a 30-yard pass and took an 8-0 lead into halftime.

The third quarter, like most of the game, was a battle in the trenches as both teams made big plays to thwart drives and frustrate the offense. Newark went up 14-0 late in the third quarter on a 55-yard drive.

In the fourth quarter Smith fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Mike DePass and the two-point conversion cut the deficit to six with eight minutes left. But two quick scores by Newark, one on a four-yard run and the other set up after an interception on the Harvey 40-yard line, put the game out of reach. Harvey scored again on a 16-yard run by Smith, but the ensuing on-side kick was unsuccessful and Newark scored again on a 46-yard run.

Smith, a junior captain, led the team in rushing with 78 yards and a TD and senior captain Ricky Hicks rushed for another 69 yards. DePass caught two passes for 42 yards and a TD and junior Sam Bocklet of Cross River had two catches for 47 yards.

The defense was led by senior captain Jared Finkel with 11 tackles, DePass with nine and junior captain Javen Stepp-Davis with eight tackles, a sack and a blocked extra point. Sophomore Teddy Little added seven tackles and two sacks, junior <Jordan Washington> had five, senior Jameson Scarsella had four and a sack and senior Alex Bae of Bedford and junior Nate Gold had four tackles each.

Harvey Volleyball Gets Back-to-Back Wins

Harvey’s volleyball team won all three games on the road against Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie Friday, Oct. 24. The Cavaliers swept Oakwood with scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-21 to even their record at 5-5 for the season. It was their second consecutive 3-0 win.

Harvey’s serving was the key factor, collecting 32 aces. Carly Kaplan and Anna Ketner led the team with eight aces each followed by Sasha Fox and Claudia Smith with five each. Also chipping in with aces were Lindsay Cardaci with four along with Rebecca Tuteur and Mary Martinez with one each.

Earlier in the week, Harvey swept New York Military Academy Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Cavaliers played their final home game of the regular season.

JV Volleyball Loses Tie-Breaker to Oakwood

In the JV game against Oakwood Friends Friday, Oct. 24, Harvey saw the hosts jump out to an early 10-2 lead, but the Cavaliers clawed back into the game through strong play from Hannah Paul and Yulanda Huang and consistent serving from Emily Walsh to earn the comeback victory, 25-23.

In the second game, strong serving from Oakwood gave Friends a 25-12 victory. The third and deciding game went to Oakwood who squeaked out a 15-12 win.
