Friday, June 11th was the first Friday regular season Katonah Swim & Dive Team practice and clearly there was excitement and anticipation in the air!
As the swimmers and divers piled out of their cars at 7:30am with the female swimmers and divers in their gold lamé suits, it was an impressive sight. Today was Team Photo Day! Watching their children line up on the risers for the pictures, many of the parents commented that the female swimmers and divers looked like mini-Oscars standing at attention for the Academy Awards.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the KSDT. What better way to commemorate the golden anniversary than wearing gold lamé suits!

Amy Brown, mom to Thomas and Kieran, commented that she “still could not get over how fabulous the suits are.”
Jasper Braunschweiger (age 8) asked some of the KSDT Parent Committee members why only the girls were wearing the gold lame. It was explained that the parents reasoned that the boys would prefer black jammers versus gold lamé jammers. To which he confidently exclaimed, “I’d wear one!” Many of his fellow male swimmers agreed!

After the picture was complete a little before 8am, the coaches treated the team to a morning of fun games in the pool as opposed to laps, flip turns and repetitive starts. Everyone enjoyed the break from the routine.
As the clock neared 8:45am, the excitement grew and slowly some older swimmers started to exit the pool. The new swimmers to the team, the KSDT Blue Fish, at first did not understand why the older swimmers were exiting the pool and heading to the picnic tables. But then they saw the small army of moms carrying in “the boxes”. Quickly, they learned that it was DONUT FRIDAY. And the only thing that made Donut Friday better for the Blue Fish was learning that they got first choice!
Donut Friday is a long standing KSDT tradition. After practice on Friday mornings, all KSDT swimmers can pick out a donut to enjoy. But, Blue Fish get first choice. And once all the KSDT swimmers get the donut of their choice, little brothers and sisters (and even parents) can buy a donut for a quarter. And it is not uncommon to see a swimmer on the line with a quarter for a second donut!
As one of the Blue Fish walked away from the picnic table looking puzzled at the sugary confection in her hand, she was overheard asking her mom, “Can I really get a donut…. for free…. every Friday???”
What a sweet tradition.
