Mayor of Croton-on-Hudson Named Executive Director of Sustainable Westchester

Leo Wiegman selected for his experience with municipal governance and clean energy sector

Leo Wiegman, Mayor of the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, has been named Executive Director of Sustainable Westchester, the County-wide consortium of over 40 municipalities working together to build a more sustainable future for their communities.

In announcing Wiegman’s appointment, Sustainable Westchester co-chair Chris Burdick said, “Leo is the perfect person to get this organization up and running. His experience in municipal governance and in the clean energy sector will serve all our members well as we develop new and exciting ways for residents and businesses to save energy and money, while protecting the environment.”

Wiegman responded by saying, “I’m delighted to join in leading Sustainable Westchester toward a clean energy economy. We see a future in which residents have stabilized electricity service and rates, power outages affect fewer and fewer critical facilities, food waste is worth real dollars, electric vehicles become revenue sources, and micro-grids pay clients to shed load. The list goes on and on.”

Wiegman was a leader in the formation and success of the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium, a predecessor organization to Sustainable Westchester. He is the author of two books and dozens of articles related to sustainability. He currently serves as Second Vice-president and chair of the Green Committee of the Westchester Municipal Officials Association.

Sustainable Westchester was recently named by the Public Service Commission to implement the very first community choice aggregation (CCA) pilot program in New York State, a cutting-edge initiative that allows municipalities to put out for bid the total amount of natural gas or electricity being purchased by local residents and small businesses.
