Parades Honor Fallen War Vets in Bedford and Katonah

A beautiful morning led to Memorial Day celebrations across the community.

Memorial Day observations were festive but poignant in the town of Bedford yesterday, with parades and ceremonies to remind those in attendance that on a weekend known for parties and barbecues, individuals should also reflect and honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military service.

"I just think it's important that we remember the people that really gave for our country and made the ultimate sacrifice," said Chip Welsh, who marched in parades in Bedford Village and Katonah.

Bedford Hills was first off, marching at 9 a.m. from Babbitt Road. The event was sponsored by the Bedford Hills Lions Club and the Bedford Hills Fire Department. The community spirit exhibited at the hamlet's recent centennial celebration was on display again.

Patch was able to attend festivities in Katonah and Bedford Village, held later that morning, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.

In Katonah, marchers began from the firehouse on Bedford Road and ended in front of the Katonah Village Library. With veterans and fireman leading the procession, local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts also marched. The parade ended with an ice cream social for children back at the firehouse.

The veterans then headed over to Bedford Village to lead the way followed by local little league baseball teams, boy scouts, and a caravan of firetrucks. The annual Bicycle Decorating Contest encouraged the  children to ride along in the parade to show off their patriotic upgrades.

Patch captured video highlights, including community reflections on the meaning of the holiday.
