Pound Ridge Elementary School Celebrates World Read Aloud Day

Earlier this month, some of the Bedford Central School District elementary schools participated in World Read Aloud Day, a day designed to celebrate the joy of reading and sharing stories.

Pound Ridge Elementary School celebrated by inviting community members to read a story chosen by the teacher in each of their K – 5 classrooms.

“World Read Aloud Day was developed by an organization called LitWorld and is intended to have people, all over the world, read aloud in celebration of the gift of literacy and to advocate for those who do not have access to literacy education,” explained Pound Ridge Elementary Consulting Teacher Erika Volpe.

To celebrate, Pound Ridge Elementary School’s special guests were welcomed with a light breakfast before a student escort led each of them to their assigned class. Readers included Detective Mulcahy from the Pound Ridge Police Department; Dr. Carey, Assistant Director of Special Education at BCSD; Billy Fortin, owner of The Market; Ebie Wood, president of the Pound Ridge Historical Society and PRES alum; Susan Williamson from Booksy; Dave Goldberg, Town Recreation Department; Daphne Everett, owner of Kitchen Table; Sam Dodge, Pound Ridge Fire Department; Alan Ramsey, Pound Ridge Library; and Kevin Hansan, Pound Ridge Town Supervisor.

Students huddled in small circles in each of the classrooms as the special guests read books like One Green Apple, Cherries and Cherry Pits, Love, Not Norman and Ish throughout the school at the same time. The event was not only a celebration of literacy, but a celebration of community with students and their special guests bonding over stories.
