Harvey Stays Hot in Hoops Action

Harvey’s varsity basketball team continued its hot streak Friday, Jan. 9, as the Cavaliers defeated Storm King 50-41.

After coming off their best performance of the season in a road victory against King two days earlier, the Cavaliers were sloppy on offense against Storm King and were getting beat under the boards. Despite a sluggish start to the game, Harvey still went into halftime with a three-point lead.

When Storm King tied the game early in the second half, Harvey came right back with a 6-0 run. Halfway through the second half, the ejection of Storm King’s head coach following his second technical foul of the game seemed to energize the Cavaliers as they continued to stretch the lead.

When Storm King made one more run late in the game to cut the lead to five with just over 2 and a half minutes left, Harvey’s senior guard Ricky Hicks iced the game with a big 3-pointer to stretch it back to a nine-point lead.

Hicks led Harvey with 16 points. He added three assists and had four steals. Junior Mike DePass chipped in with 10 points and collected eight rebounds. Senior Sacha Kantor and juniors Jovell Forsythe and Rohan Cassells each had six points.

Harvey (6-4) has won three in a row. All four losses came in tournament play.

Lady Cavs Keep Rolling

The girls varsity basketball team picked up where it left off before the holidays with back-to-back victories in the first week of play in the new year.

On Friday, Jan. 9, the Lady Cavs won big against Storm King, 51-8. Freshman Julia Mallon of Katonah led Harvey with 11 points. Junior Tessa Knorr had nine while junior Julia Frisch chipped in with eight points.

Earlier in the week in their first game back from the holiday break, the Lady Cavs notched a 50-27 win against Masters of Connecticut.

Once again Mallon paced Harvey’s offense with 13 points and two assists. She also had seven steals. Sophomore Hannah Paul played big, getting 10 points, collecting eight rebounds and blocking two shots. Freshman Sadie Albert of Katonah did a phenomenal job moving the ball and picked up five assists.

JV Boys Lose One, Win One

The Harvey boys JV basketball team had an up-and-down week last week. After two weeks off for the holidays, the JV Cavs were looking to build on their three-game win streak Wednesday, Jan. 7, when they traveled to King School of Stamford, Connecticut. The Cavaliers came out strong and were tied after the first eight minutes of play, but the Vikings got the best of them and quickly pulled away for a 65-37 victory.

Freshman Oliver Bacon led Harvey’s offense with 12 points while freshman Coy Treat of Katonah collected eight rebounds.

On Friday, Jan. 9, the Cavaliers were looking to get back to their winning ways against Storm King. They succeeded in spectacular fashion. The boys took an early lead and never let up, winning 69-29.

Every Cavalier scored with sophomore Sam Shapiro leading the way with 12 points and eight assists. Newcomer Zach Goligoski also got his first baskets of the season, finishing with four points and six rebounds.

The JV travels to Christian Heritage Wednesday in a game with playoff implications.

Boys JV “B” Basketball Wins

The JV “B” hoops team got the new year off to a great start with a convincing 34-24 win over host Forman School Thursday, Jan. 8.

Harvey jumped out to a five-point halftime lead on the strength of two consecutive 3-pointers by Zach Leff. Inside scoring in the second half by Michael Wilson, Colin Nardi, and Anzel Vasquez kept the Cavs ahead until the final buzzer.

Nine different players reached the scoring column, including Wilson (8), Leff (6), Bedford’s Victor Mizzaro (4), Curtis Grellier (4), Katonah’s Matt Drude (3), Vasquez (3), Hunter Hoffman (2), Nardi (2), and Joe Bakas (2). The leading rebounder was Nardi with seven while Vasquez had three steals.
