Upstart, Picked by Some to Win, Finishes 18th in Kentucky Derby
The Bedford-bred colt was raised at Sunnyfield Farm and is owned by Greenwich resident Ralph Evans.

Upstart, the colt born at Sunnyfield Farm in Bedford, finished 18th in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
The horse started the race in the gate next to favorite and eventual winner American Pharoah, but that as close as Upstart got to the winner’s circle as he was swallowed up from the beginning and never challenged for the lead.
Firing Line took second, Dortmund, another favorite, came in third and Frosted finished fourth.

Prior to the race, Washington Post handicapper Andrew Beyer speculated that Upstart had a good chance to win, in part because the horse had run well in all of his prior starts, even in defeat.
“We’re hoping for the best, but just to get there is a big thrill,” Upstart’s owner, Ralph Evans, a Greenwich resident, told News 12 Connecticut a couple of days before the race.
