Directors of the Yorktown Grange Fair are seeking memorabilia and photos from past Grange Fairs to compile a historical exhibit of the fair’s 89-year-old history.
Anyone who has old photos or mementos from the fair can either donate them outright or loan them to the Grange exhibit to be returned after this year’s fair, which takes place Sept. 5 to Sept. 8."[It is] not only the oldest annual country fair celebrating its agricultural roots in Westchester County, it is the only one still in existence," David Humphrey said.
Josh Davies, President and Co-Chair of the Yorktown Grange Fair, said celebrating the agricultural heritage each year is at the center of everything he and the committee do and what makes the Grange Fair unique.
"Many towns in Westchester host annual fairs and carnivals complete with ferris wheels, rides and cotton candy, but only the Yorktown Grange Fair offers all that and farm animals, tractors, vegetable and flower competitions and exhibits," he said.
The idea to create and display a historical exhibit of the fair was discussed following the donation of a 3rd Place ribbon from the 1953 fair.
"The ribbon was discovered among the keepsakes of a deceased parent and sent to us with a nice note about how special the Grange Fair was to their family each year,” Davies said. “Many generations have grown up with the Grange Fair, and while we remain true to our heritage, a lot has changed over the past 88 years – memories which we hope to capture with this exhibit.”
