NORTH BELLMORE, NY — Not willing to let rainy days hamper recess, North Bellmore students took matters into their own hands.
Student council members at John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School — Gianna Santos and Briana Sheehan — noticed the indoor recess cart was running low on new games, with many games worn down or missing pieces.
After pitching their idea to an adviser and principal, the students created handmade posters and organized a schoolwide collection drive. Over two weeks, Dinkelmeyer families donated more than 30 new and gently used games.
Student council members sorted through all of the new games, picking which games should be added the recess cart and which should be on reserve for when needed.
"I’m so grateful, because now the school has extra stuff for indoor recess," Gianna said.
