Are You Getting Ready For Middle School?

If the answer is yes, then the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD and the Community Parent Center are offering a series of workshops that you will not want to miss. “Getting Ready For Middle School: Techniques for Parents and Students to Make the Transition Easier”. These free workshops are open to all parents and their 6th grade students.

Helping your child transition from elementary school to middle school can be challenging. It is a time that is both scary, exciting, and it evokes a wide variety of emotions, behaviors, questions and concerns for all involved. The transition is accompanied by intellectual, moral, social, emotional, and physical changes all taking place at the same time.

The Getting Ready for Middle School program helps to ease the transition from elementary school to middle school for 6th grade students and their parents. The goal of the program is to help the students and their parents understand the challenges that they will encounter. The program addresses the academic, social and emotional changes faced by adolescents; thereby helping them become more confident, resilient and independent individuals. It promotes positive changes for the family, provides the students with the skills they need for their personal and academic success and promotes prevention of the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence.

During the three (3) session workshop series, students and their parents will learn practical strategies to adapt to the demands of middle school. The interactive workshop topics will include:
• Learning & improving organizational and study skills
• Coping with academic, physical & social changes
• Developing strategies for handling peer pressures
• Addressing bullying/cyber-bullying and internet safety
• Preventing underage drinking and other drug use
