Bellmore Business Managers Campaign for New Traffic Light
The managers at Saf-T-Swim at Bellmore Avenue and Oak Street have started a petition to bring a new light to Bellmore Avenue.
Two managers at Saf-T-Swim have started a petition to bring a traffic light to the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Oak Street.
According to Theresa McCarthy, who is a manager at Saf-T-Swim, customers continue to complain about the hazardous conditions, specifically when it pertains to making a left off of Oak Street on to Bellmore Avenue.
"There’re a lot of kids that come in and out of the facility," McCarthy said. "We’ve actually witnessed a lot of accidents out of that corner."

McCarthy added that she and Tom, who also is a manger at Saf-T-Swim, decided to start the petition last week, and she's received "plenty of support" thus far.
"We’re just trying to get as many names as we can to show that people really want the light here," she added.

McCarthy passed around clipboards at Wednesday's Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores meeting and spoke to raise support for the cause.

"I agree with that, and I often observe that corner," Assemblyman Dave McDonough, R-Merrick, added. "But you do have to go through the survey and the other traffic stuff first."
McDonough told McCarthy to contact him when the signatures are gathered, and he will help her with the next step. The nearest traffic lights sit at the intersections of Bellmore Avenue and Martin Avenue, as well Bellmore Avenue and Wilson Avenue.
Those that are interested in the petition can visit Saf-T-Swim at 2050 Bellmore Ave. for more information.
