UPDATE: Dog Dies After House Fire on Martin Avenue

It seems the dog died of smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

A dog has died after a house fire on 2434 Martin Ave. on Thursday morning.

According to Vincent Scaduto, public information officer of the Bellmore Fire Department, the dog seemed to have died of smoke inhalation.

"We don't know all the details yet, but the dog was not burned," he said. "Firefighters tried to revive it, but it did not make it through."

The fire occurred around 9:57 a.m. and the occupants of the two-story home were not in the house during the incident.

"The fire was mostly in the back of the house," Scaduto said. "We still do not know exactly where it started."

Fire departments from Bellmore, North Bellmore and Wantagh were on the scene. The Merrick Fire Department was on standby.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
