Bellmore Fire Department Adds 2 New Wheels

BELLMORE, NY — The Bellmore Fire Department has upgraded its wheels, adding two new trucks to its fleet.

The two new additions, a 608 and a Rescue 8, are joining the department's fleet. The Rescue 8 replaces the Army-surplus manual Deuce and a Half 608 that the department had for more than 20 years.

Bellmore firefighters said the former 608 was "invaluable" during flooding conditions, including Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. Placed in service Aug. 16, the new 608 will give firefighters another resource to help serve the Bellmore community during emergencies.

The brand-new Rescue 8 is a "multi-use apparatus" rescue truck with power steering, an extended cab, and an automatic transmission.

According to the department, the high-water rescue truck is designed to help firefighters navigate flooding and tough terrain. It was made possible through a federal grant, the department said.

"We are grateful for the grants we received to add this asset to our fleet," the department told Patch. "We are proud volunteers who are proud to serve our community."
