Bellmore Fire Department Remember Their Fallen

The Bellmore Fire Department honored Adam Rand and Kevin Prior, their two volunteer firefighters who died on 9/11, during a memorial ceremony.

Brian Desmond, 40, grew up with Firefighter Adam Rand who died on Sept. 11. He said that even though it has been 10 years, his pain still feels fresh.

"We knew each other since we were six," he said. "Ten years is just a number. Everyday hurts. It's horrible. He should be here."

Desmond and more than 100 others attended the Bellmore Fire Department's 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Sunday evening to honor Rand and Kevin Prior.

Rand, a six-year member of the New York City Fire Department, was 30 at the time of his death.

Prior, who was also a six-year member of the New York City Fire Department, was 28 at the time of his death.

"We will never forget them," Chief Robert Taylor said. "We will never forget their smiles, their humor and their love for the fire department."

Desmond, a Bellmore firefighter, searched for Rand with his colleagues after the towers were hit.

"It took like two weeks to find him," he said.

Since 9/11, Desmond has had three children. He said that even though his kids  never met Rand, they know of "Uncle Adam."

"They know that he died for a good cause," he said. " They know he died to help other people."
