Bellmore-Merrick Earns Reward School Status from NYS

Eight Bellmore-Merrick schools were among 67 across Nassau and Suffolk Counties classified as "reward schools," Newsday reported.

They were commended for their academic achievement by New York State.

In the North Bellmore School District, Park Avenue Elementary School, Martin Avenue Elementary School and Newbridge Road School have been invited to compete for up to $150,000 in grants.

"We are very pleased that three of our schools – Martin Avenue, Newbridge and Park Avenue  - are among the 67 schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties that have been recognized by the State for outstanding academic achievement," North Bellmore Superintendent Arnold Goldstein said. "All of our schools, including Saw Mill and Dinkelmeyer, have consistently done very well on all of the barometers that measure student success. It is gratifying and encouraging to know that the State acknowledges the fine job that the staff of North Bellmore does on behalf of our students."

In the North Merrick School District, Camp Avenue School, Harold D. Fayette School and Old Mill Elementary School were honored as well.

"We take great pride in attaining this unique achievement and feel that the entire community should share in this accomplishment," North Merrick Superintendent David Feller said. "The high quality education provided in North Merrick is due to the genuine collaboration and partnership that exists between an excellent administrative, teaching, and support staff, a forward thinking Board of Education and a highly supportive and involved parent community."

In the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, Sanford H. Calhoun High School and John F. Kennedy High School were also recognized by New York State for their academic achievement.

District officials did not respond to emails for comment.
