Bellmore-Merrick Girls Bowling Falls to Levittown Division
Calhoun senior Kate Brown led the team to hand Levittown its first defeat in any game this season, but came up short, losing 7-4 overall.
The Bellmore-Merrick girls bowling team matched up against the second-ranked team in Nassau County in Levittown-Division on Monday afternoon, but fell by a 7-4 margin.
The girls rebounded strongly after struggling the first time they faced Division earlier in the season when they were swept 11-0. Bellmore-Merrick also narrowly fell by 24 pins in total Monday, 2,117-2,093.
“The girls all bowled great games today,” Bellmore-Merrick head coach Keri Cinelli said. “We had a couple of high scores. Kate [Brown] bowled outstanding again and Nicole [Celuro] came through in the clutch at the end.”

Mepham senior Laura Rooney led the way in the opening game with a score of 219. Calhoun senior Kate Brown finished right behind Rooney with a 190. Another Calhoun senior in Nicole Celuro posted a 156, followed by Calhoun freshman Kayla Cappuzzo with a 146. Levittown caught a few critical breaks in the final frame to jump out to the early lead, 728-711.
Celauro improved her score from the first game with a solid 176. Cappuzzo and Rooney also contributed with scores of 159 and 155. Brown wrapped up the middle game scoring with a 132. Both Bellmore-Merrick and Levittown had their fare share of mistakes, but it was the latter that again took the win, 635-622.

In the third game, Bellmore-Merrick hung tough to avoid a second sweep against their opponent. Brown stepped up when needed most to shoot a team-high score of 233. Celauro and Rooney both bowled a 181, followed by Cappuzzo with a 167. Despite another impressive score from Division's Erica Schneider with a 243, Bellmore-Merrick edged out Levittown to hand them their first lost game of the season, 760-754.
“I am very excited that we won, especially with Erica’s [Schneider] last game,” Celauro said. “We had a very close first two games, so I think we bowled well.”
Levittown came into the match with a perfect 77-0 game record, sweeping every opponent this season. They ended Monday with a 83-3 mark due to the comeback win by Bellmore-Merrick in the final two frames.
“Everyone bowled fantastic, and that was what needed to be done to beat this team in that final game,” Cinelli added.
Bellmore-Merrick currently stands with a 5-3 record along with a No. 3 overall ranking in Nassau County, and will take on Wantagh Thursday at 4:15 p.m. at the Levittown South Lanes.
