A Bounty of Learning at Park Avenue Elementary School

Students used the holiday to hone their skills.

First-grade teachers at Park Avenue Elementary School used Thanksgiving as a way to teach math, social studies and literacy skills.

Robin Obey’s classroom was turned into a kitchen on Nov. 18, as students made cornbread, pumpkin cookies and cranberry sauce in preparation for their Thanksgiving feast the following week. By taking part in the activity, children learned the importance of following directions and using correct measurements.

Jeannine Griffin read students “A Turkey for Thanksgiving” by Eve Bunting, and Patricia Assande had the children make Native American tablecloths. After learning how the Native Americans used pictures to tell stories, students were given a chart with symbols and had to create their own tales.
