Boy Scout Dedicating Courtyard to his Deceased Friend

Eagle Scout project will rebuild gazebo and benches, clean area, and dedicate it to Shawn Asman.

For his Eagle Project, local Boy Scout is restoring the courtyard at Calhoun High School and rededicating it to the memory of a fellow student. But he's seeking help from the community to make the project a reality.

North Bellmore resident Ian Randman has been in the Boy Scouts since third grade, and he has always dreamed of making Eagle -- the highest rank in Scouting. And now he has his chance.

Every Eagle Scout hopeful has to complete a project that betters their community in some way. Randman has chosen to renovate the courtyard at Calhoun High School. Right now, a gazebo stands in the courtyard, but it is falling apart and is being taken down. Randman, 16, has proposed to replace it with a new gazebo, as well as some benches for students to sit on. The whole project will be dedicated to the memory of Shawn Asman, a student who died in December, 2014.

Randman's sister had been dating Asman for about three years before he passed away, which was how Randman got to know him. "After he died, I knew I wanted to dedicate my Eagle Scout project to him," Randman said.

For his project, Randman plans on building a new gazebo and restoring the benches that are at the site. He also plans on building tables where students can eat lunch, as well as cleaning the entire area so it looks new.

Though Randman attends Mepham High School, he decided to base his project at Calhoun High School because it was where Asman went to school and was best known.

To complete the project, Randman is looking to raise $6,000. Most of that will go to the gazebo. Anything extra he raises will be donated to Calhoun. Those who donate $500 or more will have a plaque with their name added to the site. To donate, click here.
