Editor’s Note: The following was written by representatives of the South Bellmore Civic Association.
This small u-shaped beach owned by the Town of Hempstead is located on Legion Street and has eroded terribly over the years.
The Town of Hempstead has agreed to replace the fence and clean the beach. We also spoke with the TOH Conservation and Water Department regarding the installation of a bulkhead or jetty to prevent further erosion because during a storm it floods the street.
They agreed to this after surveying the property but, are currently waiting for a permit.
This land was originally called Maplewood Beach Club. In the sixties, this beach had cabanasand bathroom facilities. A key was given to homeowners for a private gate. Neighbors remember this was an amenity given to homes built by developers.
We could have the residents possibly get control of it again, but taxes would have to be paid on it.
