Cougars Take Rivalry Lacrosse Game Against Mepham 10-3

Zac Shuldiner and Michael Casson combine for six goals and the win.

Rivalry games are always the most fun. They are filled with excitement - whether you enjoy the hard hitting or the high score count. Yesterday's Kennedy versus Mepham matchup was no exception, even though the Cougars stole the show and 10-3 win over the Pirates.

With tight play in the first few minutes, both teams quickly put pressure on each other's goaltender. But it was the Cougars who would first draw blood and continue to claw at their opponent. Before long, the Cougars took a 3-0 lead with goals by Zac Shuldiner, Michael Casson and Joe Stagliano.

Kennedy had its opponent on the run for most of the first quarter, but it wasn't until 50 seconds left that they found the net. Kevin Zollo then scored a goal at point-blank range to get Mepham on the board.

Before the quarter began, Mepham coaches told their team to make shorter passes because of the wind. Unfortunately for Mepham that wasn't their only problem, and despite solid defensive play by Chris Shevins, Kennedy found the net three more times. Michael Casson and crew took a 6-1 lead going into the second half.

Starting late in the second quarter the rivalry started to peak as the hits got more intense and the playing sped up. Mepham's Dylan Carnovale scored just seconds into the half, but the offense still couldn't sustain heavy pressure.

Kennedy goalie Patrick Grillo didn't face that many shots, but was making the saves when he needed and ended the game with nine saves.

Kennedy led 8-2 into the final quarter and the coaches were telling them to stay focused and play smart. On the other side of the field, Mepham Coach James Koester just wanted his team to finish strong.

The fourth quarter had both team's benches involved, giving some of the other guys some playing time. This was interesting to watch as back-up Cougars goalie Alex Naftal made five great saves. Mepham's Kris Wright scored a goal, as did Kennedy's Michael Casson and Zac Shuldioner. Mepham's Brandon Lazarus ended his day with 10 saves.

Koester told his team, "we need to rally around each other" and with that hopes to finish the season off strong.

Kennedy Coach Craig Papach added, "it's a nice rivalry. We knew we needed an early lead and that 3-0 lead was key."

Kennedy next takes on New Hyde Park High School at home this Saturday at 10:30 a.m., while Mepham is home against Jericho High School at 10 a.m.
