Despite Rainy Weather Mepham Defeats Malverne, 11-6

Freshmen dominate offense in Mepham's victory over Malverne.

Even though the Mepham Lady Pirates (9-2) were coming off a loss to Clarke on Saturday, they came out strong yesterday against Malverne (2-8), winning 11-6 despite undesirable weather conditions.

The first half of the game the Lady Pirates were in full control on both defense and offense despite the relentless downpours. Their defense was sharp and kept Malverne to just a few shots on net and only two goals.

Their freshman players dominated their offense. Four freshmen made their mark on Malverne's net. The most notable being Cristina Olson with two goals and two assists.

"We wanted to come out and win and dominate on the field," said Coach Geraldine O'Brien. And they did just that, ending the half 7-2.

Coming into the second half, the field conditions worsened, but Mepham was as ready as ever.

"Our girls are tough, they are ready to play in anything." O'Brien explained.

Mepham kept their offense consistent with four goals. Leading the way was freshman Jessica Gelbwaks, who showed no signs of slowing down from the first half with three goals on the day.

"Jessica never played lacrosse until 15 months ago and now has had several great games at the varsity level," O'Brien said.

Other players that contributed to the win were Nicole Stackpole with two goals and Cristina Olson with two goals and three assists.

Despite their offensive domination their defense wasn't as solid.

"We definitely have more lacrosse skill but sloppy play due to the rain did degrade the game a bit," O'Brien said.

Mepham's defense let up four goals in the second half, despite the nine saves their goalie Kathryn DeLauter deflected.

The girls take on Valley Stream Central today at 4:30 p.m. at the Jerusalem Avenue field.

On the downside Malverne couldn't control their sticks as they racked up a few penalties. One being a check to the head of senior captain Lauren Johnson who was sidelined during the end of the second half.

With the season close to the end the playoffs are definitely in Mepham's future. "Were taking it one game at a time and getting ready to play undefeated Valley Stream Central." Relayed Coach Vetro.

The Pirates are sure to have a win next game when they travel to Hempstead high school to take on the (0-7) Tigers at 4:30pm on Thursday.
