East Meadow Jets Fly by Lady Pirates Softball, 9-0

Outfielders Nicole Pazienza and Kaitlyn Bazarewski sent to the hospital after colliding while trying to catch a deep fly.

In girls softball yesterday, the (0-3) Mepham Pirates looked for some big knocks from their bats to nab their first win of the year as they took on the (3-0) East Meadow Jets. Unfortunately the Pirates only got hard knocks, as they lost 9-0.

The game was dominated by East Meadow both offensively and defensively from the beginning. East Meadow pitcher Lindsey McCarthy pitched an incredible five innings giving up only one hit and no runs.

"She's been great, not one run scored on her yet this year," said Jets Coach McCarthy. "She confident and knows she has strong defense behind her," she continued.

The biggest blow against Mepham came from the Jets catcher Britney Anghel hit a deep homerun over the left field wall.

Mepham has had injuries at all levels this year and they can add two more to the list. During the top of the fifth inning center fielder Nicole Pazienza and right fielder Kaitlyn Bazarewski collided while tracking down a deep fly in the left centerfield gap. The sound from the hit alone drew the boys baseball game to a screeching halt, as the two players remained still on the ground for several minutes.

"Both girls were sent to the hospital [one with a possible concussion, and the other a dislocated right thumb]," said Mepham Coach Mike Muscara. "Our bench is shot as it is, and we have no one to bring up."

The junior varsity Softball team is already playing with a depleted roster of nine team members right now, currently with recent injuries the varsity roster has 10 players.

"It's tricky when a ball is hit like that and the fielders are going out on an angle, said Jets Coach McCarthy. "I didn't hear anyone call it, I just hope their both okay," she continued.

Even though injury woes continue but Muscara said, "We'll whether the storm until the other players get healthy."

"At least the younger players will get experience," he added.

Mepham looks to get their first W under their belts today when they travel to Farmingdale at 4:15 p.m.
