JFK High School Celebrates Homecoming
Bellmore-Merrick celebrates Homecoming on a new turf field.

John F. Kennedy High School, in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, held its annual Homecoming Festival and football game on Oct. 9 on their newly refurbished turf field in Bellmore.
Hundreds of residents flocked to the school grounds and participated in a number of games, including a dunk tank where students got the chance to soak their teachers. Students, staff and community members were also able to purchase Kennedy merchandise such as shirts and sweaters, and various food options were available as well.

Just before the game, the Bellmore Fire Department lit the annual bonfire pile, as bystanders watched the flames climb up into the darkening sky.
The Kennedy Cougars football team took on Jericho High School in a rare night game for Kennedy, as rented lighting stands ran on generators throughout the game. This year, the Homecoming game was rescheduled to accommodate the field’s preparation.

The halftime show featured the girls’ varsity cheerleading squad, the kickline and the Kennedy High School band. At midfield Kennedy also crowned its 2014 Homecoming King and Queen, Reid Bachman and Sara Coluccio, respectively. The runner-up candidates for King and Queen included Jake Gumpel, Eddie Koton, Jack Rosenzweig, Amanda Cammiso, Rebbeca Greenstein and Shellie Mittleberg.
After an intense matchup that went into overtime, the Cougars fell to Jericho 22-14. In attendance for the event was Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Superintendent John DeTommaso, Kennedy High School Principal Lorraine Poppe with Assistant Principals Jon LaRochester and Eileen Connolly, and Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Board of Education Trustees Dr. Nancy Kaplan, Janet Goller and Susan Schwartz.
