Lady Pirates Can't Snap Losing Streak
Mepham Girls Basketball put forth a valiant effort, but were crushed by MacArthur, 71-26.
The Mepham Girls Basketball team came in to Wednesday night's game against the MacArthur Generals at the bottom of the standings with a 1-7-0 record in conference and 4-8-0 overall. Tonight it was more of the same for Mepham, losing 71-26 at MacArthur.
The game started off slow going up and down the court for the first several minutes without a bucket for either team until MacArthur broke through with the first score. The action and intensity of the game really started to heat up from then on. The Pirates seemed to be playing an even game in the first quarter even though the Generals began to mount their lead.
With several minutes left in the half Melham's All-County Sophomore Kristen O'Brien registered a deep three from far behind the line, just beating the buzzer. O'Brien finished the contest with a respectful 10 points and 10 rebounds. By the half the score was 36-13 and the momentum never seemed to shift, MacArthur never looked back.

"It was just on of those game, the ball just kept going in," said MacArthur coach Kathleen Auer. "We had two three point buzzer beaters to end two quarters, that never happens. The team just played well tonight."
In fact all but one player scored for the Generals.

"We lost four of our starters to injury, including last years player of the year, Alex Leung," added Mulvey. "It's hard to make up for that."
In every loss, good teams find a bright spot and learn from their mistakes, and in this contest Mepham did exactly that. Team spirit and fun is still part of every sport and the Pirates showed incredible character even in defeat. Towards the end of the game starters were removed and younger players were substituted in, the veteran team members cheered on their younger classmates harder and louder as they scored late in the game.
"This team has a great attitude, they never hang their heads," said Mulvey.
Mepham looks forward to Friday, Jan. 22 when they travel back home to take on Uniondale who is 7-1-0 in conference. Last time these two teams matched up Mepham lost by two.
