Martin Avenue Students Cast Their Votes in the Cookie Caucus

In an election lesson, kindergartners had to choose between Oreos and Chips Ahoy. It was a tight race.

While the rest of the country was deciding between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, kindergartners at Martin Avenue Elementary School made an equally important decision when they headed to the polls on Nov. 7 -- students picked their favorite cookie, choosing between Oreos or Chips Ahoy.

As a fun way to learn about the election process, teachers Lorraine Doyle and Jennie Kuhn had their students participate in a cookie poll. Before the election, students chose sides, created campaign posters and made speeches in support of their favorite cookie.

On “Election Day,” each student received a paper ballot and a crayon, and then went one-by-one into a cardboard voting booth to cast their secret vote. Kuhn said the lesson taught students about voting rights in the United States and how to respectfully take part in the Democratic process.
