Mepham Tree Dedication Honors Beloved Alumnus

The Wellington C. Mepham Community came together on Oct. 3 to dedicate a special spot on the campus to the late Bellmore business owner, and former Pirate, Roy Weinman.

A newly planted tree with accompanying plaque now sits in the school’s courtyard, compliments of the school’s Leo Club, Island Greenery and the Mepham Alumni Association.

“It’s moments like these that make me very proud to be a part of the Mepham community,” said Principal Eric Gomez.

Mepham’s first Leo Club is recognized as an official Lion’s Club and is sponsored by the Bellmore chapter. Club adviser Josephine Parlagreco is a Lion herself.

“He was the reason for the start of our club,” explained Parlagreco. “He loved community and service.”

Weinman’s Hardware was a Bedford Avenue staple from the 1950s until 2014. A graduate of Mepham’s Class of 1941, Weinman and his wife, Myrna, raised four children in Bellmore – all of whom graduated Mepham as well.

“Mr. Weinman was a true Pirate who cared a great deal about Mepham and our community,” added Gomez. “His passing last year affected many in the community, especially his family.”

Weinman passed away on July 11, 2017. He was also an active member of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores and the Bellmore Lions Club and started the latter organization’s flea market.
