Domestic Abuse May Have Led Murder/Suicide, Police Say
Police say Douglas Kelly murdered his wife, Dawn, and then killed himself Thursday night. The investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE, 11:45 A.M.: Nassau County police have identified the dead couple as Douglas and Dawn Kelly, and said that domestic violence likely played a role in the murder/suicide.
According to Newsday, Douglas Kelly, 54, killed his wife, Dawn, 50, with a shotgun in the couples' bedroom, and then went into the bedroom of their 21-year-old daughter and killed himself.
Douglas was often verbally abusive to his wife, News 4 reported, but police had never been called to the house for a domestic incident.

The night of the murder, Dawn told her daughter to stay at a friend's house because her father was in a foul mood, Newsday reported.
Police have not yet said what caused Douglas to murder his wife.

ORIGINAL STORY: Nassau County police are investigating an apparent murder/suicide that happened in Bellmore Thursday night.
According to police, officers responded to a call at 8:22 p.m. for injured people at a home on Thomas Place in Bellmore. When they arrived, they found a 50-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man both dead from gunshot wounds.
Detectives are investigating it as a murder/suicide, police say. The names of the deceased are being withheld until their families are notified.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
