Nassau Police Release Details On Fatal Sunrise Highway Crash

The crash left one person dead and closed Sunrise Highway for hours while police investigated.

Nassau police have released details of the accident that left one motorcyclist dead and closed Sunrise Highway for hours on Sunday.

According to police, a 44-year-old man was driving a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle west on Sunrise Highway just before 4 p.m. when he collided with a gas tanker tractor trailer just east of Newbridge Road. Police say the motorcyclist was attempting to stop when his motorcycle dropped and slid into the rear of the tractor trailer.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by a medic. The driver of the gas tanker was taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. The tractor trailer was released to its owner, and the motorcycle was impounded for a brake and safety check.

Police have not yet released the identity of the motorcyclist. They say the investigation is ongoing.
