North Bellmore Family Buried Father in Backyard After He Took His Life: Police

After fueling speculation of a homicide in North Bellmore Thursday, Nassau Police said on Friday that it was not a murder, but a suicide.

Police said Thursday night that they were investigating a possible homicide that occurred earlier that morning on Pea Pond Road in North Bellmore. When they arrived, police discovered that the senior male member of the household shot himself, taking his own life. As per his wishes, his family buried his body in the backyard.

The family at the house showed police the shallow grave they had dug and the body.

According to News 12, the man was a decorated war veteran. The police were called by a non-family member.

No charges have been filed. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
