North Bellmore Fun Runs Promote Fitness
Students learned the importance of healthy living and exercise while enjoying the wonderful autumn weather.
Students throughout the North Bellmore School District were reminded about the importance of physical fitness, as each school hosted a Fun Run on Nov. 1. It was held immediately after Halloween, a day known for indulgence in sweets, to encourage children to take proper care of their bodies.
An event that originated several years ago at Saw Mill Road Elementary School with physical education teachers Jim Mulvey and Tom Steinmuller, has now grown into a districtwide initiative. For the Fun Run, students were given 40 minutes outside on a brisk but sunny autumn day to get some fresh air and exercise as music played in the background.
At Saw Mill, volunteers from the PTA marked the students as they completed each quarter-mile lap. Children could run or walk, with some completing several miles in the time.

“We want to promote healthy lifestyles,” Mr. Mulvey said. “Exercise helps the students in the classroom and with their overall experience in school. It makes them feel better about themselves.”
