North Bellmore Grad Picks Park For Eagle Project

Matthew Connelly will renovate the garden and make it an even more inviting space.

Matthew Connelly, a former student at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, will return to his alma mater to improve the community garden.

The 2011 Park Avenue graduate is now a senior at Wellington C. Mepham High School and will do the work for his Eagle Scout project. He will replace the existing composter with one that is closer to the ground and has a removable front. Students can become more involved in the composting process by collecting, turning and using the dirt to further enhance the garden and learn about the value of recycling.

Connelly will add a bench to provide more seating in the garden, which is often used as an outdoor classroom, and will paint the back wall of the shed with chalkboard paint to create a space for students and teachers to write on. Other work will include landscaping and repairing any damages.

Art teacher Jill Skelly and first-grade teacher Robin Obey started the garden six years ago to teach the students the value of sustainability. Over the years, students and staff have enjoyed the “garden to table” experience during school-wide activities such as salad day and stone soup day.

“We are thrilled that Matthew selected Park Avenue, his former elementary school, as the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout project,” said Principal Eileen Speidel. “His improvements will make the garden more child-friendly.”
