North Bellmore School Board Candidate: Peter Mayo

Mayo has been a resident of Bellmore since 2001.

Editor's Note: This article was written by Peter Mayo.

My name is Peter Mayo.

I am 38 years old. I have been married to my lovely wife Marissa for the past 12 years. We have a son, Peter, who is 8 and a second grader at Martin Ave Elementary School. We also have a beautiful daughter, Bianca, who is 5 and will attend Martin Avenue in the Fall.

I have been a member of the Bellmore community since 2001. Although, I grew up in Franklin Square and Marissa grew up in Oceanside, we looked for a new neighborhood to buy a home and raise a family and we felt Bellmore was the perfect fit.

In 1992 I graduated from Valley Stream North High School. After High School I attended college and majored in electrical engineering. However, before graduating, I was selected into the apprenticeship program of Local Union #3 in New York City and in 1995 I began my career as an electrician. I continued my education at Empire State College receiving an Associate of Science Degree in Labor History and Electrical Theory. I have also completed many courses in Labor Relations, Labor Management, Contract Negotiations and Mentoring.

Throughout my tenure in Local 3, I have been elected and selected to serve on various committees within the union to represent its members. These include but not limited to: The Wage and Policy Committee: which is responsible for contract negotiations, creating Bi-Laws, overseeing of apprentice applications and conducting interviews of applicants, overseeing fund creations and the distribution of existing funds to its’ members.  The Local 3 Safety Committee: Where, as a member of the National Safety Council, I was selected to represent Local 3 at the 2012 National Safety Convention and Caucus in Orlando. I am also a member of The Local 3 Election Committee, the Foremans Committee and The Catholic Council of Electrical Workers.

Here in Bellmore I have been an active member of the community, volunteering my time whenever asked. Whether it is as a member of the North Bellmore Civic Association, a parent at Martin Avenue or as a coach/volunteer in various organizations throughout the area. These include the Bellmore/Merrick PAL, the Bellmore Little League, the East Meadow Soccer Club, Cub Scout Pack 192 and the Bellmore Braves Football Program. I believe that truly being a member of a community means volunteering your time helping out your neighbors and doing what you feel is right.
