North Bellmore Students Learn Meaning Of Hanukkah

The students got to enjoy latkes and dreidel while learning about the holiday.

BELLMORE, NY - From North Bellmore Public Schools: There was excitement in the air as third-graders at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District gathered for the annual Hanukkah celebration. The event was organized by third-grade teacher Beth Niditch, who explained the importance of having children understand the many different ways in which people celebrate the holidays.

Ms. Niditch talked to students about the origins of Hanukkah and how it celebrates the “miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days.” As she cooked up latkes, teacher Judy Wakie read “Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins.” Sixth-grade volunteers then shared aloud “The Borrowed Hanukkah Latkes” as teachers served
students the fried potato pancakes. The celebration concluded with students playing the dreidel game.
