Small Business Spotlight: Built Well Solar Corp.

Your name: Dan Sabia
Name of business: Built Well Solar Corp.
Your job title: President & CEO

  1. When were you founded? 2001
  2. How did your business come to be? I am a retired Major in the U.S. Army National Guard and was called in as a first-responder when the Twin Towers fell. I came home thinking how important it is for our country to become energy independent. Then I noticed a line at the bottom of my LIPA bill asking for "solar pioneers" offering rebates if you put solar on your home. Since I also have a construction background and then took courses in solar installation, I became the first person to install a 10 kilowatt solar energy system on Long Island. Eventually other people asked me to help them do this, so I began installing solar energy systems part-time, which became a full-time business eventually.
  3. Why did you choose the Bellmore area? I grew up here, and I still live here.
  4. What do you offer customers? Full turnkey services -- design and installation of solar electricity and solar hot water systems.
  5. What do you want your business to be best known for? Quality and longevity, and our Long Island roots. We help our neighbors in our own backyard of Long Island switch their homes and businesses to solar. We were the first solar company in Nassau County, and we understand the local utility company requirements and local building permit requirements better than any newcomers ever could.
  6. What's your most popular product or service? Solar electricity for homes. People learn quickly how affordable it is, and realize it's a better than the best of Wall Street investment.
