Splash into Summer Reading at the North Bellmore Library
Kids of all ages are making books part of their summer fun.
School's out, and while the last thing on most kids' minds is reading, the North Bellmore Library is making sure that they don't forget about books this summer.
The library has once again joined the New York state-wide initiative to keep students learning and reading throughout the summer months.
Through a variety of events, activities and of course books, this year's theme, "Make a Splash, Read" will keep Bellmore children visiting the library just as often as they visit the pool. Children from age 3 to grade 6 are invited to join the summer reading club, while older students can join the youth reading program.

"We try to plan an activity every day for the kids," said reference librarian Vivian Kowalewski.
Activities include museum visits, art classes, story times, movies and magic shows, all incorporating the "Make a Splash, Read" theme in some way.
The library has teamed up with schools in the district, setting aside books from the assigned summer reading lists, and allowing children to use those books towards completing their reading charts.
The charts are at the center of the summer reading program. Each student is given a goal number of books based on their age group. Students return to the library with each completed book to receive a check on their chart.
A friendly competition is going among the elementary schools in the district. Last year, the Martin Avenue School took the prize for most books read.
Younger readers can get involved too. The library's "read-to-me" program invites parents to bring their toddlers, up to age 3, in for group reading and activities like finger painting, sing-a-longs and story time.
"The library is a fun place to be during the summer," said Jane Sullivan, head of the Children's section. "We're encouraging everyone to take advantage of all the great activities. And of course everything is free."
The summer reading program will begin with a kick-off celebration on this Sunday at 2 p.m. Registration for the summer reading club has begun this week. Visit the North Bellmore Library to sign up.
