Students Float Their Boats At Saw Mill
The project fostered creativity and collaboration while reinforcing problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
From North Bellmore Schools: As part of a science lesson on buoyancy, fourth-graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District made boats and tested their durability.
Students in Stacey Theodore’s class worked in groups and designed boats using aluminum foil. They placed their creations in pans of water and added pennies until it sank. The winning boat held 64 coins.
The project was led by student-teacher Danielle Buckley, who is in the education program at Adelphi University. It fostered creativity and collaboration while reinforcing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The fourth-graders enjoyed challenging themselves to build the strongest boats.
