Team Effort Leads Lady Pirates to Lax Victory Over Sewanhaka

Lauren Johnson scores six goals, while goalie Kathryn DeLauter makes 18 saves in a 20-13 victory.

Captain Lauren Johnson led the Lady Pirates (11-0) with six goals and two assists in the win over (7-2) Sewanhaka 20-13, keeping the undefeated team in first place in Conference V.

With two teams that were deemed to be of even caliber coming into this matchup, the outcome was better than expected for Mepham.

The beginning of the first half proved to be the expected nail-biter. Mepham quickly turned that around, outscoring The Sewanhaka Indians 9-3 in the half.

After a better than expected first half, Mepham came out just as powerful at the start of the second striking Sewanhaka's net first.

The rest of the second half was exactly what was expected of the two teams. It was a highly competitive back and forth contest from both teams, scoring goal after goal. However, Sewanhaka just couldn't keep up with the Pirates aggressive offense.

Sewanhaka certainly felt Johnson's presence during the contest,  totaling another three goals in the second half bringing her final tally for the game to six.

Also scoring three goals in the half was junior Alex Giorgos.

"Three goals is the most Alex had in several weeks," said Coach Geraldine O'Brien. "She's back and confident. We definitely needed her return."

Captain and senior goalie Kathryn Delauter continued her spectacular play as she racked up a total 18 saves on the day contributing to the win.

Mepham ended up triumphing with a  20-13 win over the Indians.

"Everything went right today," added O'Brien. "From our goalie, DeLauter to Giorgos on attack, and everything in between."

Mepham is in line to at least share the conference title pending a win over Glen Cove on Thursday at their last home game of the season.

"We expect to use every player on our bench and come out on top and win the conference," O'Brien said.

Regardless of the outcome of their Thursday home game against Glen Cover High School at 4:30 p.m., the Mepham Lady Pirates are expected to start their playoff reign Monday, May 17.
