What's a Leaf Minor?

Leaf Miners attack various kinds of shrubs and bushes

Leaf Minor hits Long Island

We have been receiving a lot of calls lately about customers’ trees and shrubs turning brown. The common symptom looks like the plants haven’t been watered but that is very common mistake. What really is going on in our part of Long Island is we have been invaded by a little pest called Leaf Miner.

What’s a Leaf Miner?

A leaf miner is the larva of an insect that lives in and eats the leaf tissue of plants. There are a number of insects that are categorized as leaf miners but the vast majority of leaf-mining insects we are seeing are from moths that live in the dense part of the plant and feeds directly within the tissues of the leaves; hence the name leaf minor.

The most common trees and shrubs Leaf Miner will infest are evergreens, cottonwoods, elms, azaleas and boxwoods.

Leaf Miner larvae are flat, enabling them to mine inside and feed on a leaf or needle. Feeding larvae eat the green tissue creating blotches on leaves or turning needles brown. As your trees turn brown, you keep watering them but what really is happening is the Leaf Minor is snacking on the investment you made in your landscaping.
