3 From Brentwood Rescued Near Capsized Rowboat On Sound: Cops

In a harrowing experience Friday night, their rowboat capsized and they were unable to get back to shore for many hours, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY —Three people whose rowboat capsized were rescued from the Long Island Sound early Saturday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, at 6:38 a.m., police, the United States Coast Guard, Suffolk County's marine unit, and the Wading River Fire Department responded to a call about the individuals, who were located near the capsized vessel off of Wildwood State Park, on the Long Island Sound.

Wading River Fire Department responders found and removed the three from the water; they were wearing personal floatation devices and had left Wildwood State Park at 10 p.m. in a rowboat that was also recovered by Wading River firefighters, police said.

Edwin Perez, Pedro Benetez, and Carlos Joya, all of Brentwood, told officials that their rowboat had capsized at 1 a.m., and they had been unable to return to shore, police said.

The three were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Wading River Fire Department Ambulance for evaluation and treatment of non-life threatening cold water exposure, police said.
