5-Year-Old Girl Seriously Hurt in Crash; Woman Charged With DWI

The child was airlifted to the hospital after the head-on crash on Long Island Saturday night.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – A 5-year-old girl was seriously injured in a crash involving a drunken driver on Long Island Saturday night, police said.

According to Suffolk Police, 57-year-old Sandra Stewart was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry east on Motor Parkway and turning left onto Joshua’s Path in Central Islip when her car crashed head-on into a 2006 Honda SUV that was traveling west on Motor Parkway at about 8:53 p.m.

Genesis Castro-Aguilar, a 5-year-old passenger in the backseat on the Honda, was transported via ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and then airlifted to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park for treatment of serious injuries. Stewart was taken to Southside Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda, Hugo Chavez, 23, of Huntington Station, and four other passengers, including his wife and another child, were not injured.

Fourth Squad detectives charged Stewart, of East Patchogue, with DWI. She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
